The Parliament current monsoon session reaches its 14th day today, August 8. The Lok Sabha will convene at 12 noon to discuss the no-confidence motion brought against the Modi government at the Center regarding the Manipur violence. This is the second time since 2014 that a no-confidence motion has been initiated against the Modi government.

The discussion on the no-confidence motion is set to begin at 12 noon in the Lok Sabha and is expected to continue until 7 PM. During this time, Rahul Gandhi, a Congress Member of Parliament, may open the debate. On August 10, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will respond to the no-confidence motion.

No-Confidence Motion
Reasons for Introducing the No-Confidence Motion: The provision for a no-confidence motion is laid out to determine whether the government has a majority in the Lok Sabha or not. Any government can be subject to a no-confidence motion. To pass it, there must be support from more than 50% of the total members present and voting in the Lok Sabha.

What is a No-Confidence Motion? The Lok Sabha represents the people of the country. Elected representatives sit here, and thus, the government must have the trust of this House. Only with a majority in this House can a government retain the right to stay in power.

The Manipur Violence and Its Impact

The backdrop of this no-confidence motion stems from the Manipur violence, a series of unfortunate incidents that unfolded recently, leading to loss of lives and considerable unrest in the region. The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with the opposition and several citizen groups questioning the government’s response to the crisis. The gravity of the situation has forced the opposition parties to take this extraordinary step and bring a no-confidence motion against the ruling government.

Rahul Gandhi Takes the Helm:

As the proceedings commence at 12 noon, all eyes are on Rahul Gandhi, the dynamic leader of the opposition, who will spearhead the debate. Rahul Gandhi’s participation in the discussion signifies the importance his party places on the issue and the determination to hold the government accountable for its actions, or inactions, that led to the crisis in Manipur.

The opposition’s choice of Rahul Gandhi as their spokesperson for this crucial debate underlines the significance they attach to his voice. Having consistently advocated for the rights and welfare of the common man, Rahul Gandhi’s presence will undoubtedly add weight to the no-confidence motion and challenge the ruling government on its handling of the Manipur situation.

The Government’s Defense:

On the other hand, the ruling government will have the opportunity to present its defense during the debate. Government representatives are expected to emphasize the steps taken to restore peace in Manipur and explain the measures to address the root causes of the violence. They may also highlight the challenges faced in tackling insurgency and maintaining law and order in the region.
